John Kingsley (PAI, DA) was born in Glasgow in 1956 and studied drawing and painting at Glasgow School of Art from 1973-77 under James Robertson (RSW, RGI, RSA) Jeoffrey (DFA, RSW, RGI, RSI) and the late Dr David Donaldson (RSA, RP, LLD, D.Litt) Formerly an artist and Limner to the Queen in Scotland. He has exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute and at the Royal Scottish Academy and Paisley Art Institute. He was elected an artist member of the Glasgow Art Club in 1979. From 1980-86 he exhibited one-man shows at the annual S.N.O. promenade concerts at the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow and in 1986 he was elected a member of Group 81 Artists, who exhibited regularly at the McLellan Galleries, Glasgow. Since 1987, he has been an artist member of the council of the Paisley Art Institute.
The Institute, which was founded in 1876, promotes contemporary art through its annual exhibition and also organises the prestigious Scottish Drawing Competition biannually, in addition to building up its own noteworthy collection. He was a finalist in the Hunting Art Prizes competition in London in 1989, 1993 and 1998, and was highly commended in 1996 in the same competition. In 1991 he won the William Bowie Landscape Prize and in 1992 the Mary Armour Award the Paisley Art Institute.
