NICK OFFER

Educated: Edinburgh College of Art (B.A. Painting), Winchester School of Art (M.A. Fine Art).Nick's current paintings are based on figures taken out of their environments (usually by collaging random photos) and combined in new contexts. These contexts are often the backgrounds of other photos taken from the internet. The aim is to see if the figures resonate in some unexpected way with their new environments. When an unexpected tension between the figures within these environments is chanced upon (sometimes implying a narrative) a painting is made based on the collage. 'The process seems to me a useful way of circumventing a predictable or conscious approach to grouping figures. I like to discover the reasons for their presence together as the collage or final picture progresses. I also want to allow the paint to dictate the direction the picture takes. I try therefore to leave the preparatory collages quite unresolved so that discoveries can be made in the final picture.'Exhibitions: London Contemporary Art Prize 2017, Finalist, Lacey Contemporary Prize 2016, Finalist, Krilova Stelfox Gallery, London, 5th Base Gallery, London,Collyer Bristow Gallery, London, Christie's, St James's, London, Mall Galleries, London, Espacio Ribborn, Barcelona, Teatro Riereta, Barcelona, The Century Gallery, Henley-on-Thames, Panorama Gallery, Barcelona Can Felipe, Barcelona, Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, The Collective Gallery, Edinburgh.
