JOHN GRICE

John Grice's paintings take the traditional subject of still-life, and challenge expectation through unusual juxtapositions. He attempts to present the images in a grander, more intense light. His artworks are created through a process similar to collage, bringing together elements of found imagery, the artists own photography and carefully observed first hand drawing. The paintings are often enhanced by the presence of birds that provide a narrative and generate a tension of opposites in terms of comparing and contrasting joy with sorrow, cruelty with innocence, or beauty with ugliness. The skilled execution of these works reveal a mastery of the medium as well as a deep understanding of traditional values in painting. The artist's careful research and richly varied use of source material have created a compelling, and visually striking body of work.
