RYAN MUTTER

It is Industry and in particular ship building where Ryan gets his inspiration from. Britain was once the industrial heartland of the world, and it was Glasgow where the shipbuilding was done. At the time of the First World War shipbuilding provided work for 70,000 men in more than 50 yards spread along 11 miles of quayside; if it went to sea, passenger ship or cargo vessel, the chances were it was built on the Clyde But today the Clyde sits empty, a shadow of its former self, with executive flats and empty waste ground dominating the landscape. This is what drives Ryan, he sees it as his personal mission to capture not only what was once there, but also the empty space left in the lives of the people who once worked there Edward Hopper, Anselm Kiefer, Claude Monet, Sir Muirhead Bone, Joseph Mallord William Turner are just some of the artists who Ryan has taken influence from. He sees every painting as a new challenge, where he can develop his technical ability and practice techniques used by the great masters. Take a close look at one of his paintings and you will the see the build up of numerous layers of oil paint and gesso that have been laid onto the canvas, scraped back, added to, and scraped back again. In repeating this process he creates a depth and engrained texture which evokes atmosphere, and nostalgia
